In this amazingly shitty year, Operation Volkstod, the RABM one-man band from Frankfurt, decided to ease our miseries sending us their new and upcoming album. Nothing better than a preview of a good RABM record titled Sex with Satan to wash away the Christmas-induced ennui.
La one-man band RABM da Francoforte Operation Volkstod ha deciso di sollevarci dalle nostre miserie natalizie con un ascolto in anteprima del loro prossimo album, Sex with Satan, del quale vi offriamo una piccola rece in anteprima.
Comparing this new work to the previous full-length, Anti-fascist Black Metal, out in 2019, a striking betterment sound-wise is evident. The sound is less muffled and less distant, the guitar has a great, if traditionally ’90s black metal, tone, and the drum is more audible and it keeps doing what it does best: pummelling punishing rhythmic sessions into your brain, where they, unseen, take roots, so while you shower you find yourself humming them out of the blue (or of the black). The drums pass seamlessly from a blast beat to more punkish “tupa tupa”, which works in keeping the listeners’ interest high. The sound is less raw, less “kvlt”, but that doesn’t go at the expenses of aggressivity, which is perfectly audible in the screaming and in the riffing. The latter, particularly, is indebted to late eighties/start of the nineties black metal and, with the punk attitude the full-length offers, it represents a kind of in-between the two black metal waves, which will result enjoyable to fans of second wave, first wave and, also, of the current re-discovery and revival of the 80s sound, if with a contemporary sensitivity. Sex with Satan has definitely a less lo-fi approach, but fear not: the trueness of black metal sound is perfectly there in this sophomore effort. Musca Crapaque, the multi-instrumentalist behind the Operation Volkstod moniker, does not reinvent the wheel, but bends and twists black metal tropes to craft a full length which is both enjoyable and punishing, offering some real bangers for the year to come.
The lyrics are in English, another departure from the previous full-length, and, behind the title of the album, which may remind the listener of acts like Midnight, they offer some interesting insights and are removed from the superficial “sex, booze and speed (as in, methamphetamine)” some may think when picturing a black metal album called “Sex with Satan”. If the choice of English is, indeed, a departure from the previous German lyrics, the content is still firmly stepped into a rabid critique to power and inequality and the rage and hate are still directed towards injustice and suffering. For instance, the first song, Ancient Origins, is not another “innovative” elegy to an European pagan past (like we needed more of those), but a re-imagining history from the Kurdish freedom fighters fighting in and for Rojava point of view. This attention to resistance movements coupled with mythology and history comes back in the sixth piece, Resistance, which encourages to not accept the status quo and to fight imagining ourselves lined with movements stemming from history and from different geographies but unified by their fighting for freedom.
Sex with Satan is not the rock’n’roll anthem we might have expected (again, like we needed more of those), but a fierce hymn to gender equality and Feminism. Indeed, Comrade Satan is pictured doing what we know She loves to do: smashing patriarchy and putting an end to reactionary ideologies. Comrade Satan is reclaimed as the murderer of oppression and inequality, as She is, instead of being the simple shock value scarecrow used by mainstream BM or, what is worse, some kind of fascist leader for some delusional nazi-occult nsbm bands, which She is definitely not.
Another theme running through the full-length is the choice of a Left-Hand Path. It is another instance of bending and twisting BM tropes with the aim of criticizing the current state of capitalist societies and the harms this broken system had caused and is causing. Not detached from other RABM bands using occultism and esotericism as discourses which are complementary to the ones of liberation (Book of Sand, anyone?), this Left-Hand path is not the playground of some basement-dwelling occultist; it is a call to arms against all the oppressive structures in which we are inserted and live.

Rispetto al primo album, Anti-fascist Black Metal, uscito nel 2019, è subito evidente un netto miglioramento nella produzione. Il suono è meno ovattato e distante e piú chiaro, e le chitarre hanno un tono gradevolmente black metal anni novanta; la batteria è stata resa più udibile e fa ciò che le riesce meglio: martellare sessioni ritmiche punitive nel cervello dell’ascoltatore/ascoltatrice, dove prendono dimora, e ci si trova a ripeterle canticchiando sotto la doccia all’improvviso senza sapere bene da dove vengano. L’attenzione è mantenuta alta anche dal loro variare, senza sforzo né problemi, da un blast beat a ritmiche piú punk. I suoni sono meno grezzi, meno “kvlt”, ma tale produzione nn va a discapito dell’aggressività, che è ben resa dallo screaming e dai riffs di Musca Capraque. Specialmente i riff di chitarra sono interessanti, poiché, indebitati come sono ad un black metal di fine anni ottanta/inizio anni novanta, quando uniti alla attitudine punk dell’album diventano la chiave di volta per fare contenti tutt: fan della seconda ondata e fan della prima ondata, e posizionano l’album in una sorta di dialogo con il “revival” del sound degli ottanta ma mantenendo intatte le sensibilità contemporanee. Sex With Satan offre un approccio meno lo-fi rimanendo ben ancorato ad un sound black metal aggressivo e “true”. L’album non cambia le regole del gioco, ma si presenta come un piegare e riarrangiare gli stilemi del genere con risultati che sono sia gradevoli che punitivi, ed offre qualche pezzo memorabile.
Diversamente dal primo full-length, i testi sono in inglese, cosa che li rende più accessibili, e andando oltre al significato di facciata del titolo dell’album, che potrebbe ricordare band come Midnight, offrono spunti di riflessione interessanti, lontani dal superficiale “sex booze and speed” (la anfetamina scrausa) che un album black metal intitolato “Sex With Satan” sembrerebbe suggerire. Se il medium linguistico è mutato, il contenuto dei testi è ancora saldamente ancorato alla stessa rabbiosa critica al Potere ed alle ineguaglianze, ed esprime ancora la stessa rabbia e lo stesso odio verso l’ingiusto soffrire di molt. Prendiamo ad esempio la prima traccia, “Ancient Origins”. Questa non è l’ennesima, “innovativa” elegia ad un immaginato passato pagano europeo (come se avessimo bisogno di altri pezzi al riguardo), bensí una rilettura della storia del Vicino Oriente come narrata da combattent curd in Rojava. Questo legare storia antica e mitologia alle “biografie” di vari gruppi e movimenti di resistenza si ripresenta nella traccia numero sei (66), “Resistance”, che sprona a non accettare lo status quo, anzi: ci invita ad immaginarci idealmente affiancat, solidali e complic, con vari movimenti resistenti dalle piú svariate latitudini ed epoche storiche. “Sex with Satan”, il pezzo che da il nome all’album, non è l’inno RUOCK che ci si potrebbe aspettare (di nuovo, come se avessimo bisogno di un altro pezzo anthemico RUOCK) dal titolo. È certamente un inno, ma alla uguaglianza di genere ed al Femminismo. Compagna Satana, qui, è resa mentre fa ciò che più Le piace: distruggere il patriarcato e porre per sempre fine a qualsiasi ideologia reazionaria. Compagna Satana è rivendicata nella sua veste di liberatrice, mentre pone fine ad oppressione ed inuguaglianza, come a Lei piace certamente fare, invece di essere il semplice spauracchio da shock value del BM mainstream o, anora peggio, una sorta di occulto leader fasci0-metafisico, come per qualche band NSBM da operetta; cosa che certo Lei non è.
Un altro tema che si ritrova più volte nell’album è quello legato alle scelte di un “Left-Hand Path”. In un altro esempio di quanto Musca Capraque riesca ad utilizzare a suo gusto e secondo la sua sensibilita gli stilemi ed il “giá visto” del Black Metal, tale scelta tematica è finalizzata ancora ad una critica delle società capitaliste e dei danni che tale sistema perverso ha causato e continua a produrre. In maniera similare ad altri progetti RABM che utilizzato l’occultismo e l’esoterismo come discorsi [Cultural Studies doloso?] complementari a quelli politici di liberazione (basti pensare ai Book of Sand), questo “percorso della Mano Sinistra” è evocato non come il gioco di qualche occultista da cameretta, ma come una chiamata alle armi contro le strutture di oppressione in cui tutt siamo inserit e viviamo.
Questi non sono che assaggini tratti dall’album, che è di prossima uscita: non diremo nient’altro al riguardo, per non rovinarvi la sorpresa quando avrete modo di ascoltarlo nella sua interessa (fatelo, ché vale). Mostrate il vostro supporto ad Operation Volkstod!
