[EN] We spun the latest EP by Nottingham-based Flagburner. “Satanic Panic” is musically consistent with their latest works, including the full-length “STRIKE!”. A very well-balanced mix of raw black metal and industrial/techno/EBM.
[IT] Abbiamo ascoltato l’ultimo EP di Flagburner, da Nottingham. “Satanic Panic” è musicalmente coerente con i precedenti lavori, incluso l’album “STRIKE!”. Un mix sapientemente bilanciato di raw black metal e industrial/techno/EBM.
After all, the intent of Flagburner has always been clear: if we can’t dance it’s not our revolution. Thus, they make our revolution, and our black metal, danceable. Yet, what strikes about Flagburner is probably how outspoken they are, probably one of the most outspoken RABM projects. The band’s name and logo, the albums’ artwork, the samples, the titles and lyrics: everything about this band is a call to arms, a denouncement, a hymn for revolting. The EP includes four songs: “Dump the bosses off your back”‘s lyrics come from an old IWW song, and make it about Jeff Bezos and contemporary billionaires. The title track is about the resurging satanic panic and unveils how this new trend of Qanon/trump types accusing people of child sex offences for political gain, is not new and has happened throughout history. The third song, “Nothing Ever Changes”, is about institutions and how they are structurally opposed to change, which breaks every dream of the hopeful reformists. Finally my favourite song: “I went to a marvellous party” mocks the former British PM Boris Johnson which was having parties while the rest of us were in lockdown. All in all, Flagburner is a very militant and fun project we’ll follow. Give it a spin, and dance with it.
Dopotutto l’intento di Flagburner è sempre stato chiaro: se non possiamo ballare non è la nostra rivoluzione. Quindi Flagburner si impegna a rendere la nostra rivoluzione, e il nostro black metal, ballabile. E nonostante ciò, quello che colpisce di Flagburner è probabilmente quanto sia esplicito, probabilmente uno dei progetti RABM più espliciti. Il nome della band e il logo, gli artwork dei dischi, i sample, i titoli e i testi: tutto di questa band è una chiamata alle armi, una denuncia, un inno alla rivolta. L’EP include quattro tracce: il testo di “Dump the bosses off your back” proviene da una vecchia canzone dell’IWW (industrial workers of the world) ma sposta il focus su Jeff Bezos e i miliardari odierni. La traccia che dà nome all’EP parla di una recrudescenza del cosiddetto “Panico satanico”, o della caccia alle streghe, e svela come questo nuovo trend tra i seguaci di Qanon e Trump, i quali accusano gente di molestare i bambini per interesse politico, non sia una pratica nuova. Il terzo brano, “Nothing Ever Changes”, parla delle istituzioni e di come siano strutturalmente opposte al cambiamento, il che spezza i sogni di ogni speranzoso riformista. Infine la mia traccia preferita: “I went to a marvellous party”, che si fa beffe il precedente primo ministro britannico Boris Johnson, il quale organizzava feste mentre il resto di noi era in lockdown. Considerando tutto, Flagburner è un progetto molto militante e al contempo divertente, e non smetteremo di supportarlo. Provatelo, e danzate sulle sue note.
