A Pale and Haunting MoonWinter Lantern is a “one woman vampyric black metal” hailing from North Carolina, US, and which dropped their second full length, A Pale and Haunting Moon, in February 2021. Now, as for the long dead (but not enough sadly) Saint Augustine, it is time for some confession. In more than a decade as an avid listener, I personally never, ever approached “vampire flavoured black metal”, even more: I always kept away from it, as I believe vampires do with garlic and crosses? I don’t know, honestly vampires are not my thing. I feel is important to highlight this because one should not let the label (well, as long as it doesn’t start with N and finish with SBM, that is) prevent themselves from approaching a piece of music to which the former is attached. In this case, it holds true even if you were part of team Jacob. I know you know what I am referring to, even if now you want to play the part of the trve kvlt necro grim warrrior. But enough idiocy, to the full length.

This album is introduced by an atmospheric, enjoyable and short synth intro, something between Dungeon Synth and Perturbator. Don’t let the intro fools you, though: after this brief, vaporous an chilling welcome is over, we are here for quite a wild ride. The sheer amount of filth, darkness, rawness and crudeness unleashed on the listeners would make Fenriz and Nocturno Culto in 1992 proud.
The vocals are a cruel shriek, the riffs are gelid while being memorable and interesting, the drumming is a constant pounding with the occasional punk sensitivity (as in the fifth track, Spirits of Hatred descend from a Nekromantik Moon) and the use of synth and atmospheric, eerie and weird passages goes really well with the feelings of being caught in a tornado during a winter night. Listening to this album is nothing like I always thought “vampyric black metal” to be: it feels like being slapped and beaten by knives which came alive only in order to beat you (and I mean this as a compliment). At the end of the full length you’ll be disoriented and bamboozled, certain though to have just listened to a perfect exercise in the most raw, punishing and violent form of black metal you can find around. Personal highlight: the third track, Penumbral Romance, and its perfect balance between dissonance, atmosphere and variation and for the slower drumming, which, paired to the screams, creates an amazingly oppressive feeling.

For fans of Vampirska, Mutiilation, Despondent Moon, or Lamp of Murmuur (I stole this info from the person behind the project, given my ignorance of vampire stuff). As always, you can find Winter Lantern’s stuff on Bandcamp! They are a comrade and they produce an amazing form of raw black metal so, go and support them!
