[EN] We had a short chat with the person behind @fuck_nsbm, a page that recently joined the fight against NSBM on Instagram. Despite being new, it promises updates on NS acts and labels.

Hey comrade, what do you think of the current state of nsbm?
It’s disgusting, it’s frustrating as well. I own a small DIY label and probably half of the submissions I get are at the very least sketchy if not outright NS. It gives musicians in the genre who are decent people a bad name as well. It is really just sad and stupid that so many are aligning with those kinds of ideologies.
Yet those ideologies appeal to some degree to some young folk, why do you think that is?
I’m not really sure, that’s a bit complicated. I think maybe some of these younger people don’t quite understand the gravity of what they’re doing/listening to. I think young people also have a tendency to do exactly the opposite of what they’re told they should do. There’s also the fact that, at least within the U.S., black metal comes largely from rural areas with already right-leaning ideals. Still seems like a large step. I have to wonder how much they teach kids about this kind of stuff in school as well. I’m sure it’s a number of factors. The good news is that I’ve met a ton of young antifascists as well, I at least like to think there’s some hope for the future.
From what I get you may be in the US, I think. How large is antifascism in the metal “community” there?
I would say the community is quite divided. While most black metal is at least sketchy, there is a large group of bands and labels popping up in the last few years that are fiercely antifascist.
Do those scenes ever confront each other?
I wouldn’t say militant, at least not often but there have been a few examples of shutdown NSBM shows. There have been some scattered accounts of violence from both sides but I’ve never really seen it in my circle nor fully confirmed it. There is a lot of clashing as far as talking goes. Plenty of the Nazis like to leave bullshit on my posts or act like I’m overreacting when I explain a band is NSBM. Around here (on Instagram editor’s note) it seems to come from the older metal crowd.
I think overall it’s handled fairly well. Both sides do attempt to stay in their lanes so to speak but sometimes the arguments get out of control on social media. At least around here people who are open about being Nazis at least get called out for it. Sometimes it goes further into pages like mine sharing around the information.
How are you enjoying the RABM scene? What do you expect from it?
I really love the RABM scene, the musicians and label owners are almost always very caring, friendly people. The RABM scene is pretty great about accepting and celebrating each other differences. The music can be wild and really outside of the box for black metal. I think all I expect is for the bands and labels within the RABM scene to have integrity and be willing to openly speak out about the NSBM scene. I’ve had nothing but good experiences thus far.
Why did you choose to start your page?
I wanted a way of talking about these issues without putting myself in potential danger. Through my label, my home address is common knowledge. I started the page after finding out that a fairly well-known label (that had been vouched for) was selling NSBM. Since then the page has been here to inform others of other potentially dangerous bands/labels.
I’ve had a few odd experiences with NS labels and even some 09A-affiliated bands. It didn’t feel safe to share all this through my label regularly. However I do still maintain a very well-researched antifascist label.
Any suggestions before we call it a day?

Hey compa, cosa ne pensi dello stato corrente dell’NSBM?
È disgustoso e pure frustrante. Possiedo una piccola label DIY e probabilmente metà del materiale che ricevo è quantomeno ambiguo se non apertamente NS. Per di più ciò contribuisce a dare una brutta nomea al genere e a musicisti che non se lo meritano. È triste e stupido vedere quante persone si schierino con questo tipo di ideologie.
Eppure queste ideologie hanno un appeal di qualche tipo verso persone anche giovani, perché credi che questo accada?
Non ne sono sicuro, è abbastanza complicato. Penso che forse alcune persone più giovani non capiscano la gravità di ciò che stanno facendo/ascoltando. Penso che i giovani abbiano anche la tendenza a fare esattamente l’opposto di ciò che viene detto loro di fare. C’è anche il fatto che, almeno negli States, il black metal viene prodotto in larga parte nelle aree rurali, dove sono già diffusi ideali di destra. Ad ogni modo è comunque un salto in avanti. Mi chiedo anche quanto insegnino questo genere di cose ai ragazzini a scuola. Credo sia una somma di fattori. Ma la buona notizia è che ho conosciuto una marea di giovani antifascisti, mi piace pensare che ci sia della speranza per il futuro.
Da quello che capisco tu dovresti trovare negli Stati Uniti. Quanto è presente l’antifascismo nella “comunità” metal lì?
Direi che la comunità è abbastanza divisa. Mentre la gran parte del black metal è quantomeno ambigua, c’è una grossa fetta di band ed etichette nate negli ultimi anni e che sono fieramente antifasciste.
Queste scene si fronteggiano?
Non direi in maniera “militante”, almeno non spesso, ma ci sono alcuni esempi di cancellazioni di concerti NSBM. Ci sono inoltre dei casi di violenza da ambo le parti ma non hanno mai coinvolto il mio giro né ne ho una conferma certa. In termini di conversazione invece ci sono molti scontri. A molti nazi piace lasciare stronzate sotto ai miei post e altri mi accusano di esagerare quando svelo che una band è NSBM. Qui (su Instagram ndr) pare che queste reazioni arrivino dai metallari più vecchi.
Credo che in generale la gestione sia decente. Entrambe le parti stanno ai propri posti, per dire, ma a volte le discussioni diventano più calde sui social. Almeno qui le persone che sono esplicitamente nazi vengono pubblicamente accusate. E talvolta succede che ci siano pagine come le mie per condividere informazioni.
Ti sta piacendo la scena RABM? Cosa ti aspetti che produca?
Adoro la scena RABM, i musicisti e le label sono quasi sempre fatte da persone molto premuorose. La scena RABM è abbastanza figa e accetta e celebra le differenze di ciascun di noi. La musica riesce ad essere selvaggia e fuori dal coro, rispetto al black metal “canonico”. Mi aspetto però integrità dalle band e label contigue al RABM, dovrebbero essere capaci di condannare apertamente la scena NSBM. Comunque per ora ho avuto solo buone esperienze.
Perché hai deciso di iniziare la tua pagina?
Volevo un mezzo per parlare di questi problemi senza espormi a dei rischi, visto che tramite la mia etichetta si può risalire al mio indirizzo. Ho aperto la pagina dopo che è emerso che un’etichetta abbastanza conosciuta (e che avevo supportato) vendeva NSBM. Da allora la pagina è esistita per informare le altre persone di band ed etichette potenzialmente pericolose.
Ho avuto qualche esperienza strana con etichette NS o addirittura con band affiliate allo 09A (di cui abbiamo precedentemente parlato, qua ndr), non mi sembrava sicuro condividerò tutto ciò tramite la mia etichetta. Ad ogni modo mantengo un’etichetta antifascista ben ricercata.
Qualche consiglio in chiusura?
